Mexico City has seen a new type of superhero emerge with the arrival of Peatónito or Pedestrian Man, who is fighting for the rights of pedestrians.
In the three years that Pedestrian Man has been operating in the city, the number of road traffic accidents involving pedestrians has been severely cut. Armed with his white aerosol can (to repaint/create zebra crossing) and the Highway Code, Pedestrian Man has raised awareness of the dangers on the road, put pressure on the government to reduce the number of accidents in the area and improved road traffic safety.
Like many cities, Mexico is attempting to reduce the number of vehicles in the city and encourage the use of bikes, public transport and walking in and around the city. Last year just under 500 people were killed in the city following a collision with a vehicle.
Road Traffic Accidents: Vulnerable Road Users
Like many areas Mexico City has invested too heavily for car users resulting in inadequate safety procedures in place for others. This, in turn, has resulted in more accidents involving vehicles.
In the UK, there is a large number of vulnerable road users who are injured each year in road traffic accidents, with cyclists and pedestrians the most likely to be seriously injured or killed. According to surveys, one of the most common reasons for vulnerable road users being injured is drivers failing to look properly at junctions. Motorcyclist, pedestrians and cyclists can all be affected by this negligence.
Many road traffic safety groups have stated that as cars are relying more on technology that they are becoming oblivious to other vulnerable road users. However, if you are injured as a result of someone else’s negligence you could be entitled to make a personal injury claim.
